How Chip Design Interviews Differ at Big Tech vs. Startups

The interview loop at Nvidia or Apple looks nothing like the interview at a Series B chip startup — different round counts, different decision speed, and different people in the room. Here's how to adjust your prep for each.

Candidates often prepare for chip design interviews as if the format is universal — study RTL, brush up on STA, rehearse a few behavioral stories, and walk into any company's process the same way. But the actual interview process at a company like Nvidia, Apple, or Google looks structurally different from the process at a well-funded chip startup like Tenstorrent, Groq, or Cerebras, independent of the technical content being tested. Two to four rounds total is typical: a founder or hiring manager conversation, one or two technical rounds that often blend design and debugging into a single session, and sometimes a final conversation focused entirely on fit and motivation. Take-home assignments

Take-home assignments are more common — and often more central to the decision — at startups than at big tech. A startup with limited interview bandwidth will frequently ask you to complete a small RTL design, debug exercise, or scripting task on your own time, then use the live conversation to walk through your solution and reasoning. This lets a small team assess depth without burning multiple rounds of engineer time.

This is one of the starkest differences. Startups move fast because they have to — a founder or engineering lead who was in your interview often has full authority to make an offer, sometimes within 24 to 48 hours of your final round. This speed cuts both ways for candidates: it's less time spent anxiously waiting, but it also means less time to negotiate a competing offer into alignment, and less structured opportunity to ask clarifying questions before a decision is made.


Who's actually in the room

At Nvidia, Google, Apple, or Qualcomm, you'll typically interact with a dedicated technical recruiter managing your process, a panel of individual contributor engineers assigned to specific technical topics, and often a hiring manager who is one step removed from your day-to-day interviewers. The process is designed to be consistent across candidates and defensible in a hiring committee review — which is part of why the loops feel standardized and sometimes impersonal.

At a startup, you are far more likely to interview directly with the founder, the VP of engineering, or the lead engineer for the team you'd join — often the same person who would be your manager or closest collaborator on day one. There may be no dedicated recruiter at all; scheduling and communication often come directly from the hiring manager. This means the conversation is frequently more informal and more focused on genuine technical curiosity and cultural fit, but it also means there's less of a standardized rubric protecting you from an interviewer's individual biases or off day.

For big tech and large semiconductor companies: Prepare for depth and breadth across a longer loop — you need stamina as much as knowledge, since a bad round three of seven can sink an otherwise strong loop. The main adjustment is logistical and tonal: keep track of which process is standardized and slow-moving versus which one might produce an offer with little notice, and be ready to negotiate timeline extensions with the slower process if the faster one moves first.
