MediaTek and Samsung LSI: Mobile SoC Interview Prep

Start from the specific posting, not the brand, because a MediaTek modem role and a Samsung image-sensor role share almost nothing. Neither company publishes a detailed interview process, so confirm stages, tests, and timeline with the recruiter, and treat candidate reports as small, anecdotal samples.

You have heard of Qualcomm and Apple, so the recruiter email from MediaTek or Samsung System LSI might make you wonder where those companies sit and what the team really builds. Fair question. Both ship a lot of silicon, and both are less discussed in US interview forums than the big names.

This post draws on MediaTek's and Samsung's public pages, a SamMobile report, Counterpoint shipment numbers as reported by a tech news site, and search summaries of candidate reports. The practice prompts are ours, not reported questions.

What the two companies say they build

MediaTek's smartphone page describes its Dimensity 5G family as covering flagship to mainstream phones. It lists 5G, satellite (NTN), Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth among its wireless technologies, and says its own NPUs and camera processing (branded Imagiq) are built into the chips. The page does not give team structures or chip internals, so we will not guess at them.

Samsung's semiconductor site lists a Processor family that covers mobile, automotive and wearable processors plus modem, RF, UWB and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth parts. Exynos is the featured brand. It also lists image sensors (mobile, automotive, global shutter, time-of-flight), display driver ICs, security and power ICs. The page does not use the name "System LSI," but SamMobile's 2025 coverage uses it for the division behind Exynos and the ISOCELL camera sensors. So for an offer titled "System LSI," the work could be an SoC, a sensor, a modem or something else entirely. Ask.

Where do MediaTek and Samsung sit in the market?

Counterpoint's shipment-share data, as reproduced by The Tech Outlook in June 2026, has MediaTek first by units in every quarter from Q1 2024 to Q1 2026, at 32 percent in the latest one. Qualcomm was at 23 percent, Apple at 19 percent and Samsung at 7 percent. Shipment share counts phones, not revenue, and MediaTek's volume leans toward mid-range and entry devices. Treat the numbers as one analyst's view.

SamMobile reported in February 2025 that the ISOCELL camera sensor business was profitable while the Exynos side needed to improve, citing the division head's comments. That is a news report from early 2025 and things move. For you, the practical point is that image sensors, modems and application processors are different businesses with different hiring needs. Our mobile SoC versus data center career guide covers how the broader mobile world compares.

What do MediaTek and Samsung say about hiring?

Stage or topicWhat the employer says publiclyWhat to prepare or ask
ApplyingMediaTek's How We Hire page (we saw it only through a search summary, because the page itself would not load for us) recommends applying to up to five roles at a timePick roles that match one skill set, and tailor the resume to each
InterviewSame summary: scheduling is arranged with you, some jobs have tests first, and some have follow-up interviewsAsk whether a test comes first and what it covers
TimelineSame summary: the goal is to finish in 1 to 2 months, though it varies by positionAsk the recruiter for expected dates
Samsung processSamsung Semiconductor Europe says the process is adapted to each position and may vary from role to roleConfirm stages for your specific team and country
Samsung stagesThe same page says screening, expert assessment, and a team and management conversation could be part of itPrepare one technical deep dive and one team-fit conversation

That Samsung page is the EMEA careers page and does not mention System LSI, so it only tells you that stages vary. We did not find a System LSI specific public description of interview rounds.

What candidates report (anecdotal)

These are paraphrased from search summaries of Glassdoor, Indeed, Blind and a Taro interview write-up. We could not open most of them directly. Samples are small, self-selected and possibly out of date, and none describes the official process.

A Glassdoor summary of 193 MediaTek interviews across all job types gave an average process length of about 23 days and a difficulty of 2.86 out of 5. Individual reports in that summary were mixed by region: a written test then two technical rounds for an STA and synthesis role in India, a presentation-centered interview for a digital IC role, two 45-minute wireless technical interviews in the US, and a coding and English test followed by team and senior manager rounds for a software role in Taipei. An older Indeed report from Taipei mentioned two interviews, one with a supervisor plus an English test. Blind has threads on MediaTek interviews, mostly US-based as far as we could tell, and we found nothing specific to Hsinchu digital design or verification.

For Samsung, a Glassdoor summary for Samsung Semiconductor US averaged 27 days over 161 interviews, with a difficulty of 2.96 out of 5. For Samsung verification roles, candidate reports in search summaries mentioned SystemVerilog and UVM, architecture and object-oriented questions, and a prompt to describe a design you verified. A Bengaluru internship write-up mentioned basic physical design, CMOS and digital logic. A few reports in the same results described disorganized or inconsistent processes for some teams. With this little data, we would not read a country pattern into any of it.

How to prepare

Start from the posting, not the brand. A MediaTek modem role and a Samsung image-sensor role share almost nothing. If the title says RTL or verification, drill the basics in our SystemVerilog guide. Mobile parts live and die on battery life, so low-power design (UPF, clock gating, power domains) is worth an evening. For wireless roles, review the basics that candidate reports mention, such as OFDM and MIMO, at the level your resume claims.

Practice prompts, ours:

  • Explain how you would cut dynamic power in a block you worked on, and what you would measure first.
  • Describe how you verified a block, and what your coverage did not tell you.
  • Pick a timing or area trade-off from a past project and defend the choice.

If you have already prepared for another mobile company, our Qualcomm interview guide and chip company versus big tech comparison transfer reasonably well. MediaTek's page also mentions English tests in some regions, so ask. Before the loop, run through the week-before checklist, and use the red flags post to shape your own questions: which product, which node, what the team owns, and who it works with across the SoC.

FAQ

Q: What does Samsung System LSI actually build? SamMobile uses the name for the division behind Exynos and the ISOCELL camera sensors. An offer titled System LSI could be an SoC, a sensor, a modem or something else, so ask which.

Q: How long does the MediaTek interview process take? MediaTek's How We Hire page, seen only through a search summary, says the goal is to finish in 1 to 2 months, though it varies by position. A Glassdoor summary of 193 MediaTek interviews across all job types gave an average of about 23 days.

Q: Is there an official description of Samsung System LSI interview rounds? The post did not find a System LSI specific public description. Samsung Semiconductor Europe says the process is adapted to each position, so confirm stages for your team and country.

Q: How should I prepare for these interviews? Start from the posting. For RTL or verification titles, drill SystemVerilog basics, and for mobile parts review low-power design. Wireless roles may call for OFDM and MIMO basics at the level your resume claims.
