The honest answer is that hardware engineering hiring processes in 2026 typically take longer than software engineering processes at the same companies, for structural reasons that have nothing to do with how well you interviewed. Knowing the realistic timeline in advance helps you calibrate your expectations and manage parallel processes without panicking prematurely.


The general shape of the process

Across nearly every large semiconductor company, the hardware hiring process follows a consistent sequence: an initial recruiter screen (20-30 minutes, mostly logistics and background), one or two technical phone screens (45-60 minutes each, covering fundamentals relevant to the role — RTL, physical design, verification, or analog depending on the position), an onsite or virtual loop of four to six rounds covering deep technical topics plus a behavioral round, a team-matching conversation with the specific hiring manager, and finally an offer stage that includes compensation negotiation and, at some companies, a background check or security clearance step.

The entire process, start to finish, typically takes six to ten weeks at large companies and three to six weeks at smaller companies and startups. In software, many large companies hire into a general engineering pool and assign teams afterward, which decouples the interview loop from the final placement decision. In hardware, roles are almost always tied to a specific chip program, product line, or subsystem from the start — an RTL design role for a specific SoC team is not interchangeable with an RTL design role for a different SoC team, because the technical domain knowledge doesn't transfer instantly.
