How to Answer 'Why Do You Want to Work Here?' at a Chip Design Company
How to research a chip company's actual architecture and roadmap, avoid generic answers, and connect your technical interests to Nvidia, Apple, Qualcomm, or another chip company's specific product line.
"Why do you want to work here?" is a question chip design candidates consistently underprepare for, on the assumption that wanting to work at a well-known semiconductor company is self-explanatory. It isn't, and interviewers at Nvidia, Apple, Qualcomm, and Intel can tell within seconds whether a candidate has actually engaged with their specific architecture and roadmap or is giving the same generic answer they'd give at any company in the industry.
Why generic answers actively hurt you
"I've always been interested in chip design and this seems like a great company" is not a bad answer because it's dishonest — it's a bad answer because it's undifferentiated. It gives the interviewer zero information about whether you understand what the company actually does, and it signals that you didn't do the basic homework before showing up. - Technical keynotes — Nvidia's GTC, Apple's WWDC hardware-adjacent sessions, and AMD's Advancing AI events all contain real architectural detail.
- Engineering blogs and published papers — many chip companies publish technical blog posts or conference papers (ISSCC, Hot Chips) describing specific design choices.

Connect your specific interests to their product line
Once you understand the roadmap, the actual answer is a bridge between something specific about your background and something specific about their direction. The structure looks like:
"I've spent the last few years working on [your specific technical area], and I'm specifically drawn to [company]'s work on [specific product/architecture], because [concrete technical reason connecting the two]."
Example for Nvidia: "I've spent my career on high-speed SerDes and interconnect design, and I'm drawn to Nvidia's NVLink and NVSwitch work specifically because rack-scale GPU clusters are pushing interconnect bandwidth and power efficiency further than almost any other segment of the industry right now."
Example for Apple: "My background is in low-power mixed-signal design, and I'm interested in Apple's Neural Engine work because it sits at the intersection of aggressive power constraints and increasingly complex on-device ML workloads, which is exactly the kind of tradeoff I want to keep working on."
This kind of answer does double duty — it answers the question convincingly and it also naturally sets up follow-up conversation about your actual technical strengths, which works in your favor for the rest of the loop.
Avoid a few specific traps
Don't lead with compensation or brand prestige. Even if pay and reputation are real factors in your decision, leading with them in this answer signals that you haven't thought past the obvious.
Don't over-index on one product to the exclusion of the team you're actually interviewing for. If you're interviewing for a mobile SoC role at Qualcomm, don't spend your whole answer talking about their automotive business — tie your interest to the actual team's scope.
Don't recite the company's own marketing language back at them. Interviewers can tell the difference between genuine technical engagement and repeating phrases from a press release.
Don't ignore the team-level question underneath the company-level one. Often "why do you want to work here" really means "why this specific team," especially at large companies with dozens of distinct hardware organizations — make sure your answer addresses both levels.
